Advanced Seminar in Biodiversity Law

Winter Semester 2019/20, University of Cologne

Prof. Dr. Shamita Kumar, Guest Professor at the Chair for American Law, University of Cologne and Professor at the Institute of Environment Education and Research, Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune, India

This course will be held on selected days from 7 October to 25 October 2019 (twice a week on Wednesday and Thursday/17:15-18.45/ Venue: Lehrstuhl für US-amerikanisches Recht, Aachenerstr. 201, Room: AC201/04) and it will discuss a selection of international agreements on biological diversity as tools for biodiversity conservation using a problem-solving perspective. 

The course is a combination of classroom lectures and field visits.  It includes an optional joint field work with Indian students to the Pench Tiger Reserve, a Project Tiger Reserve in the Central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh as well as a visit to the Berchtesgaden National Park, in the south of Germany and to the Eifel National Park within the duration of the course.

The field work in India is a joint activity with Indian students and will involve pre- and post- field work group discussions, wildlife safaris, rapid rural appraisals to understand wildlife and conflict issues. The park also offers wonderful birding opportunities.

Assessment: Students who want to receive credits need to submit a paper based on the initial ideas they present during the course. The guidelines for the paper will differ depending on whether the students are taking this as an advanced module or a regular module.  This will be discussed during class and the deadline for the submission will be March 30th, 2020.
