Anita Bernstein, J.D.
Professor at Brooklyn Law School, New York
From May 17 to 27, 2023, Prof. Anita Bernstein from Brooklyn Law School visited the Chair of U.S. Law. Among other things, Prof. Bernstein gave a lecture on aspects of U.S. tort law that particularly affect women. She also participated in a conference of international students at the chair, which focused on environmental and energy law issues in Latin America. The visit furthered the close collegial and scholarly exchange that has been maintained between our two law schools for many years.
Jayson Macyda, Esq.
The Chair was pleased to welcome Mr. Jayson Macyda during his visit to Cologne. Mr. Macyda, an attorney practicing in U.S. federal courts for many years, spoke within courses of the CUSL program on the topic of pleadings (the proper drafting of preparatory pleadings in civil procedure) as well as his experiences in the practice of law and answered questions from the students of the CUSL course "U.S. Civil Procedure" following his presentation.
Philip A. Buhler, J.D., LL.M.
Attorney in the areas of civil procedure, insurance, environmental, international and maritime law
He gained expertise through a variety of litigation and transactional cases, serving a wide-ranging client base from multinational corporations in the United States, Europe, Latin America and East Asia to smaller local businesses. Mr. Buhler holds an LL.M. in maritime law from Tulane University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Miami.
The Chair of U.S. Law had the pleasure of welcoming Mr. Buhler to the CUSL program during the 2017/2018 winter semester. Mr. Buhler held a seminar in "Transportation Law" and taught the course "Civil Procedure".
Jacob H. Rooksby, J.D., M.Ed., Ph.D.
Jacob H. Rooksby is an assistant professor of law at Duquesne University School of Law in Pittsburgh, where he currently teaches courses in torts, intellectual property (IP) subjects, law and higher education, corporate governance, and social media and the law. His primary scholarship focus concerns the impact of IP law and policy on higher education. Rooksby is Of Counsel to the intellectual property group at Cohen & Grigsby, P.C. He formerly practiced law with McGuireWoods LLP in Richmond, Va., where he was a member of the firm’s IP litigation / patents department and higher education practice team. Rooksby also has experience serving as an expert witness in intellectual property litigation.
Judge Kirk Samelson, J.D.
Judge Samelson lectures on Civil Procedure and Comparative Environmental Law in joint series with Prof. Dr. Junker as part of the CUSL program at the Chair of US American Law of the University of Cologne in the 2015/2016 Fall Semester.
In 2000 the governor of Colorado appointed Judge Samelson to the District Court bench where heard civil, criminal, domestic and juvenile cases. In 2007 he was appointed to be the chief judge of Colorado’s Fourth Judicial District, presiding over 43 judges and magistrates in El Paso and Teller Counties with a total population of 600,000. He received the Judicial Excellence Award in 2010 from the Colorado chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates.
Judge Samelson retired from the bench in 2012. After retiring, he received a Fulbright Senior Specialist award to teach at Otago and Waikato Universities in New Zealand. He is practicing as a mediator, arbitrator, and as an Adjunkt Professor at the University of Denver, Colorado.
Prof. Robert S. Barker
Distinquished Professor of Law, Duquesne University School of Law
Professor Robert S. Barker has been Professor of Law at Duquesne University School of Law since 1982. He has published and lectured throughout the Western Hemisphere in English and Spanish on a wide range of constitutional law topics. He was Chair of the Constitutional Law Committee of the Inter-American Bar Association (IABA) for 12 years, and IABA's general reporter for 5 years. In 1995, he was a Fulbright scholar and visiting professor of constitutional law at the University of Buenos Aires.
In June 2015, he gave a summer seminar on Federalism, the Administration of Justice, and Constitutionalism in the United States at the Chair of US Law at the University of Cologne.

Professor Laurie Serafino is a law professor at the Duquesne University School of Law in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, since 2012. The Chair had the pleasure to have her as a guest professor, holding an 'Internet Privacy' seminar in the 2014 summer semester.

Prof. Susan C. Hascal, M.A., J.D.

Susan C. Hascall, M.A., J.D. taught Native American Law at the University of Cologne in summer 2013. She currently teaches courses in civil procedure, sales, banking law, Islamic law and emerging legal systems at the Duquesne University School of Law.
Michael Granne

Michael Granne works as a commercial litigator at Sullivan & Worcester LLP. He taught a seminar called "German Clients in US Courts" at the University of Cologne in June 2012.
Professor Granne’s research interests include the intersection of international law and the domestic legal system and the differences and intricacies of U.S. litigation involving international parties. At the Duquesne University School of Law he teached Civil Procedure, International Litigation and Arbitration and International Criminal Law.
Prof. Gina S. Warren
Law Professor, Texas A&M University School of Law
Professor Gina S. Warren is a law professor at the Texas A&M University School of Law. Professor Warren taught Civil Procedure and Energy Law as a visiting professor at Duquesne University School of Law and taught a summer seminar on U.S. energy law at the University of Cologne in 2011. She also gave two presentations to the German/American Lawyer Association on climate change regulations in the U.S., including one presentation at the U.S. Embassy in Berlin.
