Study of European Law in Cologne, Germany, Luxembourg and Paris, France

The Duquesne University School of Law in Pittsburgh, USA and the University of Cologne are hosting the "Summer Study of European Law in Cologne" program at the University of Cologne. It is aimed at students of American Law Schools. Within three weeks, the students will be taught the law of the European Union. The duration of the Summer School is based on the requirements of the American Bar Association (ABA). This will allow students to earn up to 5 credit points through the Summer School for their law studies in the United States.

The modules include courses such as Introduction to Comparative Law, Public Law of the European Union, European Data Protection Law and Social Aspects of European Law.

In addition to the classroom program and a visit to the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, a number of cultural excursions in Germany are included such as the “Haus der Geschichte” museum in Bonn, a guided tour through the Augustusburg Palace in Brühl; a guided tour through the Cathedral of Cologne and visits to the local courts, Cologne’s city hall and the state parliament in Düsseldorf.

Students will take a comprehensive written examination on the last day of class. Upon successful completion of the three-week course of study, a student may choose to do practical training under the tutelage of a practicing lawyer in an international law office that uses the English language to practice international law or American law, and to demonstrate to the student the possibilities for employment in international and foreign legal settings.

“Duquesne’s European summer abroad program offered me the incomparable opportunity to live what I was learning. My externship at Poellath and Partners in Munich allowed me to assist real clients and gave me an experience I will surely discuss in future employment interviews.” – R. Wenger (participant of the summer school in 2016)

Summer School 2023: Summer Study of Law in Europe – A Report

"It was such a privilege and a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of this program. This was truly a life-changing experience that I will never forget. The organizers of this trip did a wonderful job and gave us the opportunity to see and experience things that most people never will. It has been a lifetime dream of mine to come to Germany and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. This trip has allowed me to meet so many new people, make new friends, and explore so many places I never thought I'd get to visit. This program has made Germany feel like a second home to me!"

Abstract
For the seventh time, the Chair of US-american Law at the University of Cologne (UoC) welcomed students from the Thomas R. Kline School of Law of Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, for the three week summer school in Cologne. The global COVID-19 pandemic was not able to cloud the success that was the summer school in 2018 but rather motivated even twice as many students to join the summer school 2023!

From May, 20th to June 10th, 2023, the American students were presented with an educational program, including lectures in European Union and European Data Protection Law at the UoC, lectures in European Social Law at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon- Sorbonne, Paris, France, and a visit to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in session in Luxembourg, followed by a meeting with the German Judge at the ECJ, and member of the law faculty of the UoC, Prof. Dr. Thomas von Danwitz.

Special gratitude goes to Prof. Dr. Kirk W. Junker and P. Matthey Roy, Esq., (Chair of US-american Law, UoC), Prof. Norton, Prof. Kwisnek, and the staff of the Thomas R. Kline School of Law of Duquesne University, for organizing and carrying out a memorable once in a life time opportunity for the participating students, and Santander Universitäten for gratiously sponsoring the summer school.

The next summer school will take place in 2025!
